Maths

Throughout EYFS and the Key Stages we follow the White Rose Scheme of work for Mathematics. This approach is inclusive to all children and embeds the mastery approach for maths. White Rose’s motto is ‘maths everyone can’ which as a school we fully believe, we believe that everyone, no matter what their starting point is, can learn and improve at maths and engage in learning.

We ensure we have an ambitious curriculum, covering the whole of the content of the 2014 National Curriculum. More than this, our scheme of learning is designed to support the development of reasoning and problem solving alongside fluency to ensure challenge and ambition for all pupils.

Children will embed their learning and build competency through the following approach:

  • Concrete – children should have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing.
  • Pictorial – alongside this, children should use pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to help reason and solve problems.
  • Abstract – both concrete and pictorial representations should support children’s understanding of abstract methods.

This step-by-step conceptual process is fundamental to the development of a deeper mathematical understanding.

We will ensure our lessons have elements of mastery practice each day. Our maths lessons from Monday to Thursday will last 1 hour in the juniors and 40minutes in the infants, lessons will comprise of whole class teaching, independent practise time including fluency, problem solving and reasoning. We begin each maths lesson with Flashback 4, revisiting key recall facts and skills learnt through the year.Interventions for those who need it will be completed regularly and monitored often. Through careful lesson planning, all children are on a learning journey together from a shared starting point through small coherent steps that are achievable by all. The year group is taught mathematics together. The learning needs of individual pupils are addressed through careful scaffolding, skilful questioning and appropriate rapid intervention, in order to provide the necessary support and challenge. On a Friday morning our maths lesson is dedicated to arithmetic, recalling key number facts and learning mental strategies.
